'Mother' Talking Shapes Series
31 X 31cm Pyrography on basswood

Pyrography (writing with fire) is done using a small burning tool similar to a soldering iron.

These pieces are an ongoing experiment to bring a sculptural like element to a 2D work. I want the shapes to talk to each other and feel to the viewer like they could jump off the page or make a sound if listened too. This one and ‘Father’ are explorations of parenthood through these shapes.

Sometimes it takes me a few months to realise a name for a piece of work. This is one I completed back in May when making in the garden. It feels wholesome and has a tactile nature with the smoothness of the basswood and the texture of the Pyrography tool. Looking at it makes me think of motherhood.
